Caracal Daily: Tuesday, February 25

We're coming to you from Alexandria, Virginia.

First off, obviously the coronavirus is getting a lot of attention and with the number of headlines it is hard to keep up.

One stat that jumped out to me, a whopping 94% of the fortune 1000 have seen their supply chain disrupted or negatively impacted as a result of the outbreak.

Also, the World Health Organization has seen the number of new cases in China decline, which is positive, but there's no doubt the virus is spreading globally and there's little sense that it will be stopping anytime soon.

The White House last night requested $2.5 billion from the US Congress as a pre-emptive move as no doubt the virus will land here in the US in the coming weeks in a big way.

A big plan accordingly story.

The second story we are watching, and more long term play, solar and wind power could ignite hydrogen energy.

Hydrogen can be produced from water by surplus electricity which could power industry and the grid.

Plans to fully power a nation with renewable energy, of course, will not succeed unless countries reconfigure all of their energy systems including the fuel mix.

But the investment might be worth it.

A massive benefit of hydrogen is that hydrogen can be stored in tanks and in underground caverns, thus forming a network they can energize commerce and provide a reliable backup electrical grid.

So, a pretty interesting story that we're following.

No doubt companies and nations are looking to find electrical sources that generate less carbon and hydrogen is a super interesting fuel to make this a reality.

The third story, happening today in South Carolina, the Democrats are holding a primary debate in Charleston which will be hosted by CBS News.

The debate is going to start at 8 p.m. ET and will be the 10th Democratic primary debate this campaign cycle.

CBS News is bringing in their top talent to moderate the debate - we will see Norah O'Donnell, Gayle King, Margaret Brennan, Major Garrett, and Bill Whitaker take part.

The debate is shaping up to be a stop Sanders moment.

AP has a story entitled, Democrats unload on Bernie Sanders in a likely debate preview and provide this quote:

"With mounting fear among the Democratic establishment that the self-described democratic socialist is on the verge of gaining a significant lead in the delegates needed to secure the nomination, several candidates are resorting to a last-ditch effort to stop him."

So you have to imagine tonight's debate will be quite hostile and heavy and less attention will be placed on Bloomberg, and more attention placed on Sanders.

Speaking of attention, The State newspaper based on their in Columbia, South Carolina, has endorsed Pete Buttigieg for president - a pretty interesting and timely endorsement for the mayor of South Bend.

In the fourth story, the red planet of Mars suffers from frequent seismic activity.

Tremors shake the ground about once a day according to the first scientific investigation of the Martian interior which has been carried out by NASA's Insight Lander.

Wow, a daily earthquake - that really shakes things up (sorry, it was too easy).

Finally, sports betting and professional tackle football.

The NFL keeps warming me up to sports gambling as the league pivots again and will allow sponsorship from sportsbooks and casinos, possibly paving the way for a deeper connection between the NFL and Las Vegas.

Consider last year, the American Gaming Association reports a total of 13 billion dollars was that legally bet on sports just in the US.

Certainly, if you tool off-book action, you would have to think that number is 10 times larger - and in fact, you’d be almost correct.

Under-the-table NFL and college football wagers top $95 billion each year, according to the ESPN sports network. Overall, up to $150 billion is wagered illegally on sports every year in the United States.

That's all we got for today.

We will be back tomorrow.

Enjoy the ride and plan accordingly.
