Memo: The Ruction | January 29, 2021
1. Vaccine nationalism is brewing between the UK and the European Commission over supplies of the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine. Because of manufacturing problems, AstraZeneca will deliver less to the EC than it had planned. Governments across the world are under pressure for poor vaccine rollouts.
2. Rioting broke out across the Netherlands after the government imposed a national curfew, the first since the Nazi occupation, to curb the spread of COVID-19. Shops were looted and cars set on fire. Macron weighs up the third lockdown in France despite signs the French 'can't take it anymore.'
3. Large protests took place in Moscow and many other Russian cities following the arrest of Russia's leading opposition figure, Alexei Navalny. There were thousands of arrests, but more rallies are planned.
4. Chinese and Indian troops again clashed on the border between the two countries, in the Indian state of Sikkim. Last year the two sides repeatedly skirmished on the fringes of the Indian part of Kashmir. China has denied the recent skirmish.
5. Only five GOP senators joined Democrats in a vote that will allow Trump's impeachment trial to proceed. The GOP's lack of support suggests that the 2/3 majority needed in the Senate for conviction does not exist. Sens. Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Susan Collins (R-ME) pitch their colleagues on a bipartisan resolution censuring Trump.
6. Apple reported record revenue of $111.4bn and a $28.8bn net profit. Sales rose across all regions—the most significant gains were from China—and across all of Apple's products and services.
7. GM sets a 2035 target to phase out gas and diesel vehicles globally. GM's plan to eliminate tailpipe emissions is part of a goal to be carbon neutral by 2040. GM today gets 2% of its sales & 0% of its profits from electric cars - a long way to get 100% by 2035.
8. Call my agent: The Cannes Film Festival is postponed until at least July after a full 2020 cancellation. COVID-19 is making the planning of mass events a logistical challenge with so many unknowns and uncertainties.
9. Amanda Gorman secures a modeling agent, a performance at the Super Bowl LV preshow, and has several books in the works. A star is born.
10. Charlie Dalin placed first in the grueling Vendee Globe round-the-world sailing race. Onboard Apivia, Dalin completed the epic race in 80 days, six hours, 15 minutes, and 47 seconds.
